What is this Healthy 2012?

Healthy 2012 is a brand new 30-day program at Holden Acupuncture that combines the wisdom of thousands of years of East Asian medicine with modern science and nutrition expertise to help you achieve your weight loss and health goals in a fun and sustainable way.

This is not a quick diet plan.

The goal of this program is to help you learn a new way of eating and new habits around food and eating that will lead to greater health, longevity, energy, glow and help you achieve your healthy weight along the way.

Why 30 days?

We chose 30 days because it is a manageable period of time. It is enough time to make some significant progress in how you feel day to day as well as to start dropping pounds. It is enough time to learn, experiment, and adjust to a new way of eating.

What's the goal?

The goal for many of you will be to carry this program with you beyond the 30 days. The support given during the 30-day program will leave you with plenty of tools to easily do so. The way you will feel after 30 days will be all the incentive you need to continue on your own. For those of you who don’t continue and who just use the 30 days to cleanse the body, drop a few pounds, and learn some new and healthy foods and recipes, that's great too! You will feel rejuvenated and have tools at your disposal for any time you need them in the future.

What's the core philosophy behind the program?

Chinese medicine looks at the body, mind, and spirit differently than Western medicine. Not everyone with the same symptom (e.g. headaches, stomachaches, high blood pressure) has the same underlying imbalances causing that symptom. Chinese medicine works with each individual to find the best treatment plan for that person. Weight loss is the same. Not every person will lose weight or, more importantly, feel well on the same diet. By working one-on-one with me — a licensed acupuncturist and certified Chinese herbalist with nine years of experience treating patients and 15 years of experience working with whole foods for healing — your diet and treatment plan will be tailored to meet the needs of your body type and help to rebalance your imbalances.

Program Details

What does the 30-day program include?

  1. One full health intake and history, including detailed discussion about current diet, lifestyle, health conditions, etc. This is included and necessary even if you are already a current patient. There will be a treatment included in this visit as well as preliminary discussion about diet and lifestyle so you can start to shop and prepare. This visit precedes your 30-day plan.
  2. One session devoted to reviewing your personalized 30-day plan. This plan will include detailed food, recipes, exercise and lifestyle recommendations as well as resources for education and more recipes. There will be a treatment included in this visit.
  3. Two additional full acupuncture treatments with time included for consulting about diet, etc.
  4. Up to two additional auricular (ear only) acupuncture treatments EACH week of the 30-day program (up to eight total). These can be used as needed to help with food cravings and addictive eating.
  5. A printed copy of your individualized healthy eating and living plan as well as recommended resource list.
  6. Weekly emails, including tips, recipes, and encouragement.
  7. Phone and email access to Robin for any questions or concerns that arise along the way.

How much does it cost?

How much will I have to change my life? Is this really do-able in my busy life of working, parenting, etc.?

Here is the honest answer: yes, you will have to make changes. How extreme depends on where you are coming from and what your goals are. We will go over all of this in detail on your first visit. But feel free to call or email now and ask what you need to know to help you decide if this program is right for you. Yes, it is do-able. This, I promise you. And I am committed to helping you each step of the way. There is no real fast and effortless way to healthy, sustainable weight loss. It will take some extra time and energy on your part. Only you can decide if you are ready and this is the right path for you.

How does this program work?

This program works with a diet of whole foods: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy oils, and select animal products (if you are vegetarian, we can work with that) depending on your personalized plan. There are a few things you will need from your local health food store. But most things you can get right at your grocery store. You may spend a bit of extra money at the outset on a few items. But most of you will save money overall as you stop eating packaged, processed, and prepared foods. The specifics will vary for each person’s individual needs. There is nothing magical—no secret weight loss foods, no pills or powders or expensive supplements. Real food in its whole, natural form.

What about the rest of my family? What if they won’t eat this way? Will I be making three extra meals every day?

As a busy working mother myself, I agree that this is an excellent and valid question. It’s one thing to put in the extra time and energy to prepare food differently. It’s another thing if no one else in your house will eat it and you are stuck making different meals for everyone! This can be tricky, and I will do my best to work with each individual on this issue.

Many of these foods are delicious and you may be surprised that you and others in your family will enjoy them. I also have a handful of tricks to share that can help you prepare just one meal and then adjust some of it. For example: maybe your kids or your spouse won’t eat a certain veggie or grain. Well, they might be willing to try it with a little extra butter or melted cheese. Even though you will not be eating those foods, you can easily set some aside for yourself and then doctor the food for the rest of your family. Something to dip veggies in often makes all the difference for little ones. I also have many delicious recipes that you can enjoy and the rest of your family will too. This diet is not prison—I promise you! It is delicious and varied. I can also help with some tips to ease the rest of your family into healthier eating.

Something else to remember: you are making a big commitment to your own health and wellbeing. Be strong about this decision. Be proud! Share your goals with the people who love you and let them see your excitement about taking a step and a stand to take care of yourself. Those around you will feel your strength and support you, and they will benefit from your increased energy, strength, and improved mood.
