Fall Colds Have Started!

Fall is just around the corner, and it’s never too soon to start taking preventative measures against colds and the flu!

In Chinese Medicine, each season affects a particular system in our bodies. Fall is associated with our lung system. This means that those of us who suffer from asthma, bronchitis and other upper respiratory illnesses are more susceptible to colds and the flu during this season. As sadness is also linked to our lung system, those of us who have experienced a significant loss this past year, are also more susceptible.

Here are a few tips that will not only help relieve your symptoms, but will also strengthen the immune system, and prevent you from getting sick.

  1. Increase your intake of warming foods and beverages. Homemade ginger tea is a great option for those chilly fall days. Simply take a few slices of fresh ginger root, and simmer in water on the stove for about 30 minutes. Ladle the tea into a mug, and add a squeeze of lemon (Vitamin C!) and a little honey to soothe your throat.
  2. Keep the back of your neck warm. The back of the neck is particularly vulnerable to cold temperatures. Make sure to keep the back of your neck warm and covered. This is especially important on cold, windy days, and even if you’re in an air conditioned home or building.
  3. Try one of our Chinese Herbal formulas. We carry quality herbal supplements that will help relieve coughing and sinus congestion, as well as strengthen your immune system.
  4. Schedule a few acupuncture appointments. Acupuncture can boost your immune system and strengthen your body’s defenses. Receiving acupuncture treatment at the first signs of sickness can aid your body in fighting off pathogens and decrease the length and severity of the illness.

Be sure to take care of yourself this autumn! A few preventative measures can go a long way in maintaining a healthy body and strong immune system.
